How to Choose a Digital Marketing Agency in India: 7 Questions You Must Ask

The digital marketing agency market in India is full of impressive-sounding promises. Here's how to separate the genuine partners from the ones that will waste your budget.

Choosing the wrong digital marketing agency is one of the most expensive mistakes a growing business in India can make. Not because agencies are malicious — most aren't — but because the gap between a good agency partnership and a bad one can represent hundreds of thousands of rupees in wasted budget and months of lost momentum.

Here are the seven questions that will reveal whether an agency is the right partner for you — and the answers that should give you confidence, versus the ones that should raise concerns.

Question 1: Can you show me results for businesses similar to mine?

Good answer: "Yes — here are 2–3 case studies from clients in [similar industry or location] showing what we achieved and how long it took."
Concerning answer: "We work with all types of businesses" or showing you irrelevant examples without data.

An agency that has relevant, specific experience in your industry or market will understand the nuances — the specific keywords that convert, the content that resonates with your audience, the competitive landscape — far better than a generalist claiming to work with everyone.

Question 2: How do you report on results and how often?

Good answer: "Monthly reports with the specific metrics that matter for your goals — leads, ranked keywords, cost per acquisition — plus a monthly call to review and plan."
Concerning answer: "We'll share updates when there's something to report" or only vanity metrics (impressions, followers).

Question 3: What does the first 90 days look like?

Good answer: A specific, phased plan: audit in week 1, strategy sign-off in week 2, implementation milestones in weeks 3–12.
Concerning answer: Vague promises about "strategy first" without a specific timeline or deliverables.

Question 4: Who exactly will be working on my account?

Good answer: Named team members with experience you can verify, with clear accountability for your account.
Concerning answer: "Our team of experts" without specifics, or it becomes clear that senior people pitch and juniors execute.

Question 5: How do you stay current with algorithm changes and AI developments?

Good answer: Specific references to how they adapted to Google's AI Overviews, recent algorithm updates, or new platform features.
Concerning answer: "We've been doing this for X years" without specific evidence of adapting to recent changes.

Question 6: What are the contract terms and what happens if results aren't achieved?

Good answer: Clear deliverables, clear timelines for what can be expected, monthly rolling or 3-month contracts with flexibility.
Concerning answer: 12-month lock-in from the start with no performance milestones.

Question 7: What will you NOT do for my business?

Good answer: An honest assessment of what they don't specialise in or what won't work for your specific situation.
Concerning answer: "We can do everything" with no acknowledgement of limitations.

A genuine agency partner will give you honest answers to all of these — including the uncomfortable ones. That honesty is the foundation of a partnership that actually generates results.
