Google Ads for Small Businesses in India: A Practical Guide That Actually Works

Most small businesses either never try Google Ads or burn money with poorly set-up campaigns. Here's the practical guide to getting real results without wasting budget.

Google Ads is the fastest way to get your business in front of people who are actively searching for what you offer. Unlike SEO (which takes months), a well-run Google Ads campaign can generate phone calls and enquiries within days of going live. But the keyword there is "well-run." Poorly set-up campaigns are a remarkably efficient way to burn money.

This guide is written specifically for small businesses in Bangalore, Kochi, and Dubai โ€” based on what actually works in these markets, not theoretical best practices.

Step 1: Start with Search campaigns only

Google offers multiple campaign types: Search, Display, Video, Shopping, Performance Max. For a local service business with a limited budget, start with Search only. These are the text ads that appear when someone searches a specific keyword โ€” the highest-intent traffic Google can send you.

Display ads (image ads on websites) and Performance Max campaigns can add value later, but they require more budget and more data to run efficiently. Don't start there.

Step 2: Set your geographic targeting very specifically

This is where most small business campaigns in India go wrong immediately. Set your location targeting to a 5โ€“10km radius around your business, or name the specific neighbourhoods you serve. This reduces irrelevant clicks and dramatically improves your cost per lead.

Step 3: Build tight, intent-specific keyword groups

The most expensive mistake in Google Ads is targeting broad, generic keywords. "dentist" might cost โ‚น80โ€“150 per click in Bangalore. "teeth cleaning Whitefield bangalore" might cost โ‚น18โ€“35 per click and convert 3x better because the intent is specific.

Build separate ad groups for each specific service, and use "Phrase match" or "Exact match" keyword types โ€” not Broad match. Broad match in India will blow through your budget on irrelevant clicks within days.

Step 4: Write ads that qualify your customer

Don't try to appeal to everyone. Good ad copy for a local service business in India does three things: mentions the specific service, mentions the location, and sets a clear expectation. "Affordable Dental Implants in Whitefield Bangalore โ€” Book Free Consultation Today" is better than "Best Dentist in Bangalore โ€” Call Now".

Step 5: Send clicks to a dedicated landing page, not your homepage

This is consistently the most impactful conversion improvement for small business campaigns. Your homepage talks about everything your business does. A landing page is laser-focused on the one thing the ad promised. It has one call to action. It loads fast. It has your phone number visible. Conversion rates for landing page traffic are typically 2โ€“4x higher than homepage traffic.

Realistic expectations and budgets

For local service businesses in Bangalore and Kochi, a starting budget of โ‚น8,000โ€“15,000/month for ad spend is typically where you'll see meaningful results. Dubai campaigns generally require AED 600โ€“1,000/month minimum to generate sufficient data.

At these budgets with proper setup, expect 20โ€“40 qualified clicks per month in a competitive category like dental or real estate, and 80โ€“120 clicks in less competitive local services. Conversion rates of 5โ€“10% from click to enquiry are achievable with a good landing page.
